1 Dam, also known as Bear Creek Dam or Bull Run Reservoir No. 1, is a captivating structure located in Troutdale, Oregon. Constructed in 1929, this concrete dam stands at a height of 200 feet and serves as a vital water supply source for the region. Designed by D. C. Henny in collaboration with A.J. Wiley, the dam boasts a multi-arch core and is built on a rock foundation, showcasing its durability and resilience.
With a storage capacity of 33,760 acre-feet and a maximum discharge of 21,000 cubic feet per second, the dam plays a crucial role in managing the water resources of the area. Its controlled spillway, with a width of 120 feet, helps regulate water flow and prevent flooding during high water events. Additionally, the dam features three slide (sluice gate) outlet gates for efficient water release.
Despite its high hazard potential and very high risk assessment rating, Development No. 1 Dam has not undergone a recent condition assessment. However, emergency action plans have been prepared and updated to ensure the safety of the surrounding community in the event of a dam failure. As a key infrastructure for water supply and hydroelectric purposes, this impressive dam continues to stand as a testament to human ingenuity in managing and harnessing water resources in a sustainable manner.
