What forecasters are seeing

Plain-English forecast narrative from the local NWS office. Issued by NWS HNX.

140 FXUS66 KHNX 300530 AFDHNX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 1030 PM PDT Sat Aug 29 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... 1. Temperatures will be normal to slightly below normal through the weekend before below average by the middle of next week. 2. Remaining moisture over the region bring a 5-15% chance of thunderstorms from the foothills to the Sierra Nevada Crest this afternoon. 3. Precipitation chances return again in the middle of next week. && .DISCUSSION... Heat Dome shifting east as the district will now see afternoon highs in the 90s for several days. A broad Trough Pattern over the West Coast forcing the heat over the Mid-West will persist for most of the week with pieces of energy flowing through it. The next piece will push through the area on Monday with very limited moisture. Therefore, the next disturbance will introduce a cooling trend in temperatures with limited precipitation over the Sierra Crest. This weather pattern is expected to remain over the West Coast through at least the end of the week. While Probability of Exceedance (PoE) of reaching 100 degrees is almost non-existence, PoE of reaching 90 degrees across the San Joaquin Valley show a sharp drop from this weekend through mid-week. Ensemble surface analysis show probabilities of 90 degrees dropping to 10 to 35 percent from Tuesday through Thursday for most of the Valley. Therefore, confidence is high at widespread temperatures in the 80s will be observed around the mid-week period. Across the Eastern Pacific, satellite imagery and surface marine analysis is showing Tropical Storm Karina some 1200 miles south of Southern California. While Karina is expected to drift northwest for several days (Wednesday) some moisture will be pulled toward California and transported to Central California. This prognosis will lead toward a 5 to 15 percent chance of measurable precipitation (accumulation) between Wednesday and next weekend for a large majority of the district. With the uncertainty in the influx and trajectory of the moisture, ensemble Thunderstorm probabilities will remain very this far in advance. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions prevailing for the next 24 hours. && .AIR QUALITY ISSUES... None. && .CERTAINTY... The level of certainty for days 1 and 2 is high. The level of certainty for days 3 through 7 is medium. Certainty levels include low...medium...and high. Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Badger Pass Ski Area

Where does the snow data for Badger Pass Ski Area come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Badger Pass Ski Area?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Badger Pass Ski Area?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
