Ketner, also known as Little Church, is a local government-owned dam located in Jefferson County, Colorado. Built in 1961 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam stands at a height of 30 feet and has a hydraulic height of 18 feet, serving primarily for recreational purposes such as fish and wildlife pond activities. With a maximum storage capacity of 434 acre-feet and a normal storage of 166 acre-feet, Ketner covers a surface area of 20 acres and has a spillway width of 66 feet.
This dam on Walnut Creek-TR in Westminster, Colorado, poses a high hazard potential due to its location and structure, although it has been deemed to be in satisfactory condition as of the last inspection in March 2020. Despite its high risk potential, the dam has a moderate risk assessment score of 3 and has not been assigned a DSAC as of yet. The emergency action plan for Ketner was last revised in April 2017, and there are no inundation maps prepared for this site at the moment.
For water resource and climate enthusiasts, Ketner represents a significant structure in the management of water resources in Colorado. As a recreational dam, it provides a vital habitat for fish and wildlife while also offering opportunities for outdoor activities. With its regulated state jurisdiction and robust inspection and enforcement protocols in place, Ketner serves as an important example of how dams can be effectively managed to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety.
