Illinois is currently experiencing multiple weather emergencies requiring immediate attention. Southwestern Illinois, including the Alton, Highland, and Staunton areas, is under active Flood Advisories due to excessive rainfall from thunderstorms producing 1-3 inches of rain. Urban and small stream flooding is expected in low-lying and poor drainage areas throughout Madison and Macoupin Counties until mid-morning. Simultaneously, a dangerous heat event is developing across much of Illinois, with Heat Advisories and an Extreme Heat Watch in effect through Monday evening. Heat index values of 105-110°F are expected across central, east-central, and west-central Illinois, as well as Carroll, Jo Daviess, and Stephenson Counties in the north, with little overnight relief. Residents should avoid flooded areas, monitor local conditions, and take precautions against heat-related illness by staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
