Illinois residents should exercise caution this morning and through early next week due to multiple weather hazards. Dense fog is reducing visibility to one-quarter mile or less across northeast Illinois, particularly in Lake County and areas outside Chicago, through mid-morning—drivers should increase following distance and use low beams. More significantly, minor flooding continues along the Des Plaines River near Gurnee and Russell in Lake County, with water stages expected to gradually fall below flood stage by Thursday and Monday respectively. Additionally, the Mississippi River at Clarksville and Louisiana is experiencing minor flooding, with impacts affecting riverside communities through Monday afternoon. Residents near these waterways should monitor conditions closely and avoid flooded roadways.

Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
