Flood Warnings remain active for the Fox River near Dayton in La Salle County through Tuesday morning, with minor flooding already occurring and agricultural lands threatened near Wedron. The Mississippi River poses significant flooding risks along Illinois' western border, with warnings issued for multiple locations including Hannibal, Clarksville, Saverton, Winfield, and Canton, with crests expected Friday through Sunday. Additionally, dangerous Lake Michigan beach conditions are affecting Lake, Northern Cook, and Central Cook Counties through Wednesday evening, with waves reaching 6-9 feet creating life-threatening swimming conditions. Where does the Illinois streamflow data come from?
The U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System. USGS streamgauges report continuously (every 15 minutes) and the data is the canonical real-time record for U.S. rivers. Snoflo pulls the latest readings and joins them to a 7-day NOAA weather forecast for each station.
What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Illinois data?
