Southern Illinois residents, particularly those in areas along and north of Route 13, should exercise extreme caution today due to dangerously dry conditions. The National Weather Service reports relative humidity levels dropping to 15-20 percent, creating significant fire hazard across the region. With light easterly winds of 5 mph or less, any outdoor burning activities pose elevated wildfire risks. Residents in affected areas including southern Illinois counties should avoid all burning activities and remain vigilant about potential fire ignition sources. These dry conditions remain in effect through 5 PM CDT today. If you must conduct any outdoor activities, maintain strict fire safety protocols and have water sources readily available.

Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
