Minnesota is currently experiencing a dual threat of extreme heat and hazardous air quality. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect until 9 PM CDT today for the Twin Cities metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington Counties) with heat index values reaching 100°F and overnight lows only dropping to the lower 70s, significantly increasing risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat Advisories extend across central, east-central, and northern Minnesota with similar dangerous heat indices. Additionally, widespread Air Quality Alerts remain in effect statewide due to heavy wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota wildfires, with Hazardous conditions affecting the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, and surrounding areas, and Very Unhealthy to Unhealthy conditions across central and northern regions including Duluth areas through at least Friday morning. Residents, particularly children, elderly individuals, and those with respiratory or heart conditions, should limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned shelter, and monitor local air quality updates.

About Minnesota streamflow
Where does the Minnesota streamflow data come from?
The U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System. USGS streamgauges report continuously (every 15 minutes) and the data is the canonical real-time record for U.S. rivers. Snoflo pulls the latest readings and joins them to a 7-day NOAA weather forecast for each station.
What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Minnesota data?
USGS streamgauges report every 15 minutes; Snoflo re-pulls throughout the day. The AI briefing regenerates daily.
