Minnesota is currently facing a dangerous combination of extreme heat and critical fire conditions. Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect across multiple regions through Thursday, with heat index values reaching 100-102°F, particularly impacting the Twin Cities metro area (Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Anoka, Carver, Scott, Washington counties) and northeastern Minnesota including Duluth. Simultaneously, Red Flag Warnings remain active in northern Minnesota counties including Koochiching, St. Louis, Cook, Lake, Itasca, Roseau, and Lake of the Woods, with southwest winds gusting to 30 mph and humidity as low as 20%, creating dangerous wildfire conditions. Governor Walz has declared a peacetime emergency for wildfires in northeastern Minnesota. Residents should avoid outdoor burning, stay hydrated during the heat, seek air-conditioned shelter, and prepare evacuation plans if in affected northern counties. About Minnesota streamflow
Where does the Minnesota streamflow data come from?
The U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System. USGS streamgauges report continuously (every 15 minutes) and the data is the canonical real-time record for U.S. rivers. Snoflo pulls the latest readings and joins them to a 7-day NOAA weather forecast for each station.
What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Minnesota data?
USGS streamgauges report every 15 minutes; Snoflo re-pulls throughout the day. The AI briefing regenerates daily.
