Iowa is experiencing widespread dangerous heat conditions through Friday evening, September 4th. Multiple Heat Advisories and an Extreme Heat Warning are in effect across the state, with heat index values reaching 100-110 degrees. Southwest Iowa, including portions near the Nebraska border, faces the most severe conditions with indices up to 105 degrees and minimal overnight relief. Central and south-central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro area, are under Heat Advisory conditions with indices up to 103 degrees. Northeast and east-central Iowa face heat indices of 100-105 degrees. The prolonged heat combined with high humidity and warm overnight lows (73-78 degrees) significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Residents throughout Iowa should limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable populations, and seek air-conditioned shelter during peak heat hours.
