The river is fed by several tributaries, including the Battle Creek River and Augusta Creek. Seasonal trends show higher flows during spring and fall due to rainfall and snowmelt. The Kalamazoo River has been heavily impacted by pollution from nearby industries, including a 2010 oil spill from a pipeline owned by Enbridge which damaged over 30 miles of the river. Despite this, efforts are being made to improve the water quality and restore the river's ecosystem. The Kalamazoo River is also known for its recreational opportunities, including fishing and kayaking.
