The river flows through several towns and is fed by several smaller creeks and streams, including Townline Creek and Bannister Creek. Seasonal trends show higher flows in the spring due to snowmelt, and lower flows in the summer and fall. There are several dams along the river, including one at Maple Rapids that was built in the early 1900s to power a sawmill. Interestingly, the Maple River is known for its excellent trout fishing and is considered one of the premier trout streams in the state of Michigan.
