Washington is experiencing a critical air quality crisis driven by widespread wildfire smoke affecting multiple regions across the state. Air Quality Alerts remain in effect for northeastern counties including Spokane, Asotin, Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Stevens, Grant, and Lincoln counties through at least August 3rd. Particulate matter (PM2.5) levels are expected to reach unhealthy levels, particularly through the weekend as critical fire weather conditions and shifting winds transport smoke from active wildfires in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Additionally, a Fire Weather Watch is active for the Western Columbia River Gorge with easterly winds gusting up to 40 mph and humidity as low as 15-20%, creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. Residents in affected areas should limit outdoor activities, avoid strenuous exercise, keep children indoors, and follow medical advice if they have heart or lung conditions. Where does the Washington streamflow data come from?
The U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System. USGS streamgauges report continuously (every 15 minutes) and the data is the canonical real-time record for U.S. rivers. Snoflo pulls the latest readings and joins them to a 7-day NOAA weather forecast for each station.
What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Washington data?
USGS streamgauges report every 15 minutes; Snoflo re-pulls throughout the day. The AI briefing regenerates daily.
