Early Season Snow Stirs Across Western Mountains as Arctic Alaska Braces for Significant Accumulation
A modest pulse of snowfall has brushed across the western United States over the past 24 hours, with two inches reported at both Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascade Range and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains. While these totals remain relatively light, the real story is unfolding far to the north, where Alaska's Brooks Range is preparing for what could be the most significant snowfall event of the early season. Imnaviat Creek is forecast to receive six inches of fresh snow accompanied by rain/snow mix and areas of fog, while nearby Atigun Pass—a critical corridor along the Dalton Highway—should see four inches amid freezing fog conditions.
The Pacific Northwest's Sawmill Ridge observation, situated at 170 inches base depth near Snoqualmie Pass, reflects the region's already substantial snowpack despite the minimal recent accumulation. The two-inch addition comes ahead of hazy conditions transitioning to possible thunderstorms, an unusual pattern suggesting unstable atmospheric dynamics. Meanwhile, Colorado's Vallecito station sits at a mere three-inch base, highlighting the dramatic snowpack disparity between maritime and continental mountain ranges this season. Showers transitioning to thunderstorms could complicate travel for those accessing Wolf Creek Pass and the surrounding San Juan backcountry zones.
Alaska's North Slope dominates the near-term forecast, with Imnaviat Creek's six-inch prediction representing the heaviest anticipated snowfall across the nation. This location, positioned along the central Brooks Range, typically serves as a bellwether for early-season Arctic conditions. Atigun Pass, essential for oil field operations and one of North America's most treacherous mountain passes, faces challenging conditions with four inches expected alongside freezing fog—a hazardous combination for the handful of commercial truckers navigating this remote route.
Even Prudhoe Bay, situated on the Arctic Ocean coast, anticipates two inches as the system transitions from snow to rain, demonstrating the marginal temperatures accompanying this weather pattern. For snow enthusiasts and researchers tracking early-season accumulation patterns, Alaska's Brooks Range presents the most dynamic and significant snowfall event currently materializing across North American terrain, while the Lower 48 experiences only scattered, modest activity.

About the U.S. snow report
How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?
As of October 21, 2026, 473 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 100% of normal snowpack. 240 have snow on the ground and 25 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Nohrsc Beartown, 19".
Where will it snow in the next 5 days?
The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Nohrsc Beartown (19"). The full ranking is in the table above.
What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
