What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Front Brings Fresh Snow to Alaska While Lower 48 Sees Modest Accumulations

A stark contrast is emerging across the nation's snow landscape, with Alaska's North Slope poised to receive the most significant snowfall over the next 48 hours while the Lower 48 experiences only scattered accumulations. The past 24 hours have delivered modest 2-inch totals to Washington's Sawmill Ridge in the Cascades and Colorado's Vallecito region, but the real story is developing in Alaska's Brooks Range, where Imnaviat Creek is forecast to receive 6 inches of new snow accompanied by areas of fog and mixed precipitation. For snow enthusiasts seeking the heaviest accumulations, all eyes should turn northward to the Arctic.

Current observations show limited but notable activity in two distinctly different mountain environments. Washington's Sawmill Ridge, situated at 170 inches of base depth near the Cascade crest, picked up 2 inches despite hazy conditions transitioning to potential thunderstorms—an unusual weather pattern that suggests unstable spring-like atmospheric conditions. Meanwhile, Colorado's Vallecito area reported an identical 2-inch accumulation from a mere 3-inch base, with shower and thunderstorm activity dominating the forecast.

These thunderstorm-driven snow events indicate convective precipitation rather than the sustained synoptic systems that typically produce deeper accumulations, limiting their significance for backcountry enthusiasts and resort operations alike.

The forecast period presents far more compelling conditions for dedicated snow chasers willing to venture into Alaska's remote interior. Imnaviat Creek leads the nation with a projected 6-inch snowfall, while nearby Atigun Pass—the highest point on the Dalton Highway and a critical transportation corridor—expects 4 inches amid freezing fog and mixed rain-snow conditions. Even Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean coast could see 2 inches despite transitioning to rain, highlighting the marginal temperatures accompanying this system.

The combination of significant accumulation, reduced visibility from fog, and mixed precipitation types creates challenging but dynamic conditions across Alaska's North Slope. With base depths remaining shallow at 1-2 inches across these Arctic locations, this incoming system represents a substantial percentage increase that could dramatically transform the snowpack and provide valuable early-season coverage for the region's extended winter season ahead.

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of November 7, 2026, 841 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 100% of normal snowpack. 606 have snow on the ground and 44 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Primrose Snolite, 47".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Primrose Snolite (47"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
