Arctic Alaska Prepares for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity
While the Lower 48 states experience a relatively quiet snow pattern with only modest accumulations in the Pacific Northwest and Colorado Rockies, Alaska's North Slope is bracing for what could be the most significant snowfall event in the nation over the next two days. The stark contrast between regions highlights an early-season arctic blast targeting America's northernmost reaches, with Imnaviat Creek leading forecast totals at 6 inches, while current observations show Washington's Sawmill Ridge and Colorado's Vallecito each reporting 2 inches over the past 24 hours.
The real story unfolds along Alaska's Dalton Highway corridor, where a potent weather system is forecast to deliver substantial snow combined with challenging conditions. Imnaviat Creek, situated in the Brooks Range at 68.6°N latitude, stands to receive the heaviest snowfall with 6 inches expected amid rain/snow mix and areas of fog—conditions that will create treacherous visibility for North Slope workers and researchers. Just to the south, Atigun Pass, the highest point on the Dalton Highway at 4,739 feet elevation, is forecast for 4 inches of new snow accompanied by freezing fog transitioning to scattered rain/snow showers.
Even Prudhoe Bay, typically drier due to its Arctic Ocean proximity, could see 2 inches as the system weakens moving northward. These totals are particularly noteworthy given the minimal existing base depths of just 1-2 inches across the region, meaning this event could establish the early winter snowpack for Alaska's North Slope.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest and Southern Rockies are experiencing underwhelming conditions for snow enthusiasts. Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades reported 2 inches over the past day despite maintaining an impressive 170-inch base depth, though upcoming thunderstorm chances suggest instability rather than sustained snowfall. Similarly, Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains picked up 2 inches but sits on a meager 3-inch base with shower and thunderstorm activity forecast—hardly the powder conditions skiers crave.
For those seeking deep, fresh snow, all eyes should turn northward to Alaska's remote interior, where this developing system promises to deliver the nation's most significant snowfall through the next 48 hours, albeit in locations far removed from traditional ski resort infrastructure.

What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
