Arctic Alaska Braces for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity
Snow enthusiasts looking for meaningful accumulation should set their sights northward this week, as Alaska's North Slope prepares for the most substantial snowfall across the nation. While the Lower 48 recorded modest 2-inch accumulations over the past 24 hours at monitoring sites in Washington's Cascade Range near Sawmill Ridge and Colorado's San Juan Mountains near Vallecito, the real story unfolds along Alaska's remote Dalton Highway corridor, where 6 inches of fresh snow is forecast for Imnaviat Creek over the next 48 hours. This represents a threefold increase compared to recent observations elsewhere and signals an early-season pattern shift favoring Alaska's Arctic region.
The forecast models show impressive consistency regarding Alaska's impending snowfall event, with Imnaviat Creek—situated at 68.6°N in the Brooks Range—leading the charge with 6 inches expected amid rain-snow mix and areas of fog. Just 35 miles south, Atigun Pass, the highest point on the Dalton Highway at 4,739 feet, should receive 4 inches accompanied by freezing fog conditions that will create challenging visibility for the limited traffic traversing this isolated route. Even Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean coast, typically drier due to its proximity to open water, anticipates 2 inches despite transitioning to rain.
These totals are particularly noteworthy given the region's minimal existing base depths of just 1-2 inches, essentially doubling or tripling snowpack in a single event. The atmospheric setup features moisture streaming from the Chukchi Sea colliding with cold Arctic air, creating optimal conditions for accumulating snow rather than rain.
Meanwhile, the recent 2-inch reports from Washington's Sawmill Ridge and Colorado's Vallecito represent isolated convective activity rather than widespread systems. Sawmill Ridge, positioned in the central Cascades with a robust 170-inch base, experienced brief snow showers before conditions shifted to haze and potential thunderstorms—a classic spring pattern. Colorado's Vallecito, sitting at lower elevation with only 3 inches of base, similarly faces a transition to thunderstorms and rain showers.
For powder seekers, Alaska's remote Brooks Range clearly offers the most compelling opportunities, though accessibility remains challenging. The Imnaviat Creek zone, while lacking developed ski infrastructure, provides backcountry enthusiasts with pristine conditions and significant new accumulation in an utterly wild setting.

What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
