What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Alaska Braces for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Accumulations

Snow enthusiasts looking for the most impressive conditions over the coming days should turn their attention to Alaska's remote North Slope, where a potent weather system is poised to deliver the nation's most substantial snowfall. While the past 24 hours brought modest 2-inch accumulations to scattered locations in Washington's Cascade Range at Sawmill Ridge and Colorado's San Juan Mountains near Vallecito, the forecast period promises considerably more action. Imnaviat Creek in Alaska's Brooks Range is expected to receive 6 inches of fresh snow accompanied by rain/snow mix and areas of fog, while nearby Atigun Pass—a critical corridor along the Dalton Highway—anticipates 4 inches amid freezing fog conditions that will challenge travelers and industrial operations supporting North Slope oil fields.

The contrast between current conditions and the incoming system is striking. Sawmill Ridge's 2-inch report, deposited atop a healthy 170-inch base, represents typical late-season activity in the Cascades with hazy conditions transitioning to thunderstorm potential—an unusual spring pattern that suggests unstable air masses. Meanwhile, Colorado's Vallecito observation shows minimal accumulation on a sparse 3-inch base, though forecasted thunderstorms could bring additional moisture to the drought-sensitive San Juan region.

These scattered Lower 48 totals pale in comparison to what's developing in the Arctic, where temperatures hovering near freezing create perfect conditions for heavy, wet snow that will significantly impact visibility and travel.

For researchers and winter weather aficionados, the Alaska forecast presents a fascinating meteorological setup. Imnaviat Creek's 6-inch prediction combined with fog and mixed precipitation suggests a vigorous low-pressure system tracking across the North Slope, while the diminishing totals from Imnaviat Creek to Atigun Pass (4 inches) and finally Prudhoe Bay (2 inches) indicate the system's gradient as it moves northward toward the Beaufort Sea. The freezing fog at Atigun Pass—elevation approximately 4,800 feet—will create treacherous conditions for truckers navigating Alaska's most notorious mountain pass.

With existing bases of just 1-2 inches across these Arctic locations, this event represents a significant percentage increase in snowpack, though far from the deep accumulations these areas typically maintain during peak winter months. The blusterous conditions, combined with areas of reduced visibility, make this weekend's Alaska snowfall the clear headline for anyone tracking North American winter weather patterns.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 18, 2026, 535 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 159% of normal snowpack. 286 have snow on the ground and 35 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Upper Tsaina River, 59".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Upper Tsaina River (59"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
