Arctic Alaska Braces for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity
While the continental United States experiences only scattered snow activity in the Cascades and Rockies, Alaska's North Slope is preparing for the most substantial snowfall event across the nation over the next 48 hours. Imnaviat Creek leads forecast models with an impressive 6 inches expected, accompanied by rain/snow mix and areas of fog that will create challenging visibility conditions. The Alaska pipeline corridor, including Atigun Pass and Prudhoe Bay, faces a developing weather system that will impact transportation and operations across this remote Arctic landscape.
In the Lower 48, recent observations show minimal accumulation, with both Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascade Range and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains recording just 2 inches over the past 24 hours. Sawmill Ridge, currently sitting at a 170-inch base depth, received its modest dusting before conditions transition to haze and potential thunderstorms—an unusual weather pattern that suggests unstable atmospheric conditions mixing spring warmth with lingering winter precipitation. Meanwhile, Vallecito's meager 3-inch base reflects Colorado's challenging snow year, with the forecast calling for showers and thunderstorms rather than additional meaningful snow accumulation.
These scattered reports indicate that major ski resort operations in both the Pacific Northwest and Colorado Rockies will see minimal impact from current systems.
The real story unfolds along Alaska's Dalton Highway corridor, where Imnaviat Creek's forecast of 6 inches represents significant accumulation for the Arctic region. Atigun Pass, a critical transportation chokepoint at 4,800 feet elevation, expects 4 inches alongside treacherous freezing fog conditions that will severely limit visibility for truckers servicing North Slope oil operations. Even Prudhoe Bay, situated on the Arctic Ocean coast, anticipates 2 inches despite temperatures hovering near freezing—conditions that will transition the precipitation from snow to rain as maritime influences take hold.
This concentrated band of snowfall across Alaska's Brooks Range highlights a robust low-pressure system tracking across the Arctic, bringing moisture-laden air from the Bering Sea. For snow enthusiasts and researchers monitoring late-season precipitation patterns, this Alaska event provides valuable data on spring transition dynamics in high-latitude environments, while the Lower 48 clearly enters its post-winter thunderstorm season.

About the U.S. snow report
How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?
As of October 3, 2026, 211 snow stations are reporting. 89 have snow on the ground and 22 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Flower Mountain Snotel, 45".
Where will it snow in the next 5 days?
The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Flower Mountain Snotel (45"). The full ranking is in the table above.
What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
