What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Alaska Poised for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity

A tale of two snowbelts is unfolding across the nation, with Alaska's North Slope emerging as the clear winner for snow enthusiasts over the coming days. While the Lower 48 has recorded only modest accumulations in the past 24 hours—with Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains each picking up 2 inches—the real story lies in Alaska's Arctic regions, where a potent weather system is forecast to deliver substantial snowfall through the next 48 hours. Imnaviat Creek leads the forecast with an impressive 6 inches expected, accompanied by rain-snow mix and areas of fog that will create challenging but exciting conditions for those venturing into the remote Brooks Range.

The contrast between recent observations and upcoming forecasts couldn't be starker. Washington's Sawmill Ridge, sitting at a healthy 170-inch base near the I-90 corridor east of Seattle, received its 2-inch addition amid hazy conditions with slight thunderstorm chances—an unusual late-season pattern. Meanwhile, Colorado's Vallecito, operating with a meager 3-inch base, also picked up 2 inches as showers and thunderstorms moved through the southwestern part of the state.

These modest totals pale in comparison to what's developing in the Arctic, where Atigun Pass along the Dalton Highway is forecast to receive 4 inches of snow mixed with freezing fog and rain, creating treacherous conditions for the limited traffic traversing this critical supply route to Alaska's North Slope oil fields.

For researchers and snow enthusiasts tracking accumulation patterns, Alaska's North Slope presents the most compelling data points. Imnaviat Creek's 6-inch forecast represents significant accumulation for the region, particularly given its current 2-inch base. Prudhoe Bay, the industrial hub of Alaska's petroleum industry, rounds out the forecast with 2 inches expected despite transitioning from snow to rain—a reminder that even in the Arctic, marginal temperatures can complicate precipitation types.

The combination of snow, freezing fog, and low visibility across Atigun Pass and surrounding areas suggests an active upper-level disturbance, making this weekend's Arctic snowfall event the nation's most noteworthy winter weather story for those seeking the heaviest, most blustery conditions.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 17, 2026, 561 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 167% of normal snowpack. 323 have snow on the ground and 27 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Upper Tsaina River, 54".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Upper Tsaina River (54"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
