Arctic Alaska Poised for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity
Snow enthusiasts looking for the most promising conditions in the coming days should turn their attention northward to Alaska's remote North Slope region, where a potent weather system is forecast to deliver impressive accumulations. While the Lower 48 has seen only modest snowfall over the past 24 hours—with just 2 inches reported at both Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains—Alaska's Arctic frontier is preparing for a winter weather event that will bring 4-6 inches of fresh powder to some of the nation's most extreme northern latitudes.
The most significant action is expected at Imnaviat Creek, situated at 68.6°N latitude along the Dalton Highway corridor, where forecasters are calling for 6 inches of new snow accompanied by areas of fog and a rain-snow mix. This location, already holding a modest 2-inch base, will see substantial improvement for backcountry enthusiasts and researchers operating in the Brooks Range. Just 35 miles south, Atigun Pass—the highest point on the Dalton Highway at the Continental Divide—is forecast to receive 4 inches under challenging conditions featuring freezing fog and scattered precipitation.
Even Prudhoe Bay, at 70.3°N on the Arctic Ocean coast, should pick up 2 inches despite the marginal temperatures that will bring a chance of mixed rain and snow. These Arctic accumulations are particularly noteworthy given the transitional nature of the season and the typically dry conditions that characterize Alaska's North Slope.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions remain relatively quiet despite yesterday's minor snowfall. Sawmill Ridge in Washington's central Cascades maintains a healthy 170-inch base despite the meager 2-inch addition, though upcoming thunderstorm potential through the haze suggests atmospheric instability that could yield additional precipitation. Colorado's Vallecito, operating with only a 3-inch base, desperately needs more than the 2 inches received as thunderstorms continue to threaten the region.
For powder chasers and snow researchers, the clear winner this week is Alaska's remote Arctic, where persistent cold and active weather patterns are creating the nation's most dynamic snowfall conditions—albeit far from traditional ski resort infrastructure.

About the U.S. snow report
How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?
As of November 3, 2026, 1,023 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 100% of normal snowpack. 759 have snow on the ground and 52 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Queen Inlet Glacier Bay, 93".
Where will it snow in the next 5 days?
The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Queen Inlet Glacier Bay (93"). The full ranking is in the table above.
What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
