What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Alaska Braces for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity

A notable weather pattern is bringing meaningful snowfall to Alaska's remote northern reaches over the next 48 hours, while the Lower 48 experiences only scattered accumulation. Imnaviat Creek leads the forecast with 6 inches expected, accompanied by rain/snow mix and areas of fog, marking the most substantial accumulation anticipated across the nation. Meanwhile, modest 2-inch totals were recorded in the past 24 hours at Sawmill Ridge, Washington, and Vallecito, Colorado, indicating a relatively quiet period for the continental United States despite active thunderstorm potential in both regions.

The Brooks Range corridor in Alaska emerges as the focal point for snow enthusiasts, with Atigun Pass expecting 4 inches amid challenging conditions of freezing fog and mixed precipitation. This high-elevation pass, critical for North Slope access, sits at just 1 inch base depth currently, making this forecast snowfall particularly impactful for early-season accumulation. Further north, Prudhoe Bay rounds out Alaska's active weather with 2 inches predicted, though the industrial hub will likely see precipitation transition to rain, limiting overall snow totals.

The convergence of moisture and cold air across Alaska's North Slope represents the most vigorous winter weather activity nationwide, with terrain above 68°N latitude capturing the bulk of meaningful snowfall.

In the Lower 48, conditions remain comparatively subdued. Washington's Sawmill Ridge, despite its impressive 170-inch base depth in the Cascades, received only 2 inches over the past day, with forecasts calling for hazy conditions transitioning to possible thunderstorms rather than additional snow accumulation. Colorado's Vallecito presents similar circumstances—a minimal 3-inch base with 2 inches of fresh snow, but upcoming weather dominated by showers and thunderstorms suggests a spring-like pattern unfavorable for sustained snowpack building.

For powder enthusiasts seeking deep, fresh accumulation, the action clearly resides in Alaska's Arctic, where maritime moisture clashing with lingering cold air masses creates optimal conditions for meaningful snowfall. The stark contrast between Alaska's forecast totals and the Lower 48's scattered activity underscores an early transitional period, with winter maintaining its grip only in the nation's northernmost latitudes.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 14, 2026, 682 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 133% of normal snowpack. 378 have snow on the ground and 44 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Brady Ice-field, 55".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Brady Ice-field (55"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
