What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Alaska's North Slope Poised for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity

Snow enthusiasts looking for fresh powder should turn their attention to Alaska's remote North Slope region, where a developing weather system is forecast to deliver the nation's most substantial snowfall over the next 48 hours. While the Lower 48 has seen only modest accumulations in the past day—with 2 inches falling at both Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains—the Arctic is preparing for a notable early-season event that could bring up to 6 inches of new snow to areas near the Brooks Range.

Imnaviat Creek, situated at 68.6°N in Alaska's interior, leads the national forecast with an impressive 6-inch prediction as rain and snow mix with areas of fog. Just 35 miles south, Atigun Pass—the highest highway pass in Alaska at 4,739 feet elevation—is expected to receive 4 inches amid challenging conditions featuring freezing fog and scattered precipitation. This pass serves as a critical link along the Dalton Highway, and the combination of fresh snow and reduced visibility could create treacherous driving conditions for the limited traffic that traverses this remote corridor.

Even Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean coast, typically experiencing lighter accumulations due to its maritime influence, is forecast for 2 inches as the system pushes northward.

The contrast between regions is striking: Washington's Sawmill Ridge, positioned in the central Cascades near Snoqualmie Pass at 170 inches base depth, received its 2-inch accumulation before transitioning to hazy conditions with potential thunderstorms—an unusual late-season weather pattern. Colorado's Vallecito, operating with a minimal 3-inch base in the southwestern part of the state, similarly faces a shift toward convective activity with thunderstorms likely. These Lower 48 observations pale in comparison to Alaska's developing Arctic front, which is bringing classic early autumn conditions to the Far North.

For powder seekers and weather researchers alike, the Brooks Range foothills represent the nation's most active snow zone, where temperatures are already supporting sustained frozen precipitation while most ski resorts in the continental United States await more substantial autumn storms to build their seasonal snowpack.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 16, 2026, 621 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 200% of normal snowpack. 371 have snow on the ground and 33 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Brady Ice-field, 71".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Brady Ice-field (71"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
