Arctic Alaska Poised for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity
Snow enthusiasts looking for the most promising conditions over the next 48 hours should turn their attention northward to Alaska's remote interior, where a potent system is forecast to deliver substantial accumulations across the Brooks Range. Imnaviat Creek leads the forecast with an impressive 6 inches expected, while Atigun Pass—the iconic Dalton Highway crossing—anticipates 4 inches amid challenging conditions of freezing fog and mixed precipitation. Meanwhile, the Lower 48 has seen only modest activity over the past 24 hours, with Washington's Sawmill Ridge and Colorado's Vallecito each recording 2 inches of fresh snow, though both locations face transitioning weather patterns that may limit additional accumulation.
The contrast between Alaska's incoming snow event and conditions farther south is striking. Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascade Range, sitting at a healthy 170-inch base, reported 2 inches overnight but faces an unusual summer-like pattern with haze and potential thunderstorms threatening to curtail any meaningful snowpack building. Similarly, Colorado's Vallecito in the San Juan Mountains added 2 inches to a meager 3-inch base, but the forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms rather than continued snow—a disappointment for researchers tracking early-season snowpack development in this critical headwaters region.
These transitional conditions suggest the Lower 48 is experiencing unsettled spring-like weather rather than sustained winter systems.
Alaska's Brooks Range, however, presents the most compelling story for snow enthusiasts. The Imnavait Creek observation site, positioned in the remote tundra at 68.6°N latitude, is forecast to receive the heaviest snowfall in the nation with 6 inches accompanied by areas of fog and mixed rain-snow conditions. Just south, Atigun Pass—a vital transportation corridor and frequent target for extreme weather—expects 4 inches with particularly treacherous freezing fog creating whiteout conditions for travelers on the haul road.
Even Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean coast anticipates 2 inches, though increasing temperatures may transition the precipitation to rain. For snow researchers, this Arctic system represents a significant late-season event that could provide valuable data on snowpack persistence and melt dynamics in the Far North, where climate change impacts are most pronounced.

About the U.S. snow report
How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?
As of October 22, 2026, 491 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 84% of normal snowpack. 240 have snow on the ground and 29 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Beartown, 27".
Where will it snow in the next 5 days?
The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Beartown (27"). The full ranking is in the table above.
What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
