Alaska's North Slope Primed for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity
Snow enthusiasts looking for fresh powder should turn their attention northward this week, as Alaska's remote North Slope region prepares for the most significant snowfall event in the nation over the next 48 hours. While the Lower 48 has recorded minimal accumulations—with just 2 inches falling at both Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains over the past 24 hours—the Arctic is gearing up for a proper early-season storm. Imnaviat Creek leads the forecast with 6 inches expected, accompanied by rain-snow mix and areas of fog, while Atigun Pass anticipates 4 inches amid freezing fog conditions that will create treacherous but powder-rich terrain.
The contrast between current conditions and the forecast tells an intriguing story of seasonal transition. Washington's Sawmill Ridge, sitting at a respectable 170-inch base depth near the I-90 corridor east of Snoqualmie Pass, recorded 2 inches before transitioning to hazy conditions with potential thunderstorms—an unusual weather pattern that suggests unstable air masses rather than sustained snowfall. Similarly, Colorado's Vallecito in the southwestern mountains added 2 inches to its modest 3-inch base, though the shift toward showers and thunderstorms indicates this system is bringing more liquid than frozen precipitation.
These locations, while receiving measurable snow, are experiencing more mixed-precipitation events typical of shoulder seasons rather than the deep, sustained dumps snow researchers prize.
The real action unfolds along Alaska's Dalton Highway corridor, where Atigun Pass—the highest mountain pass in Alaska at 4,739 feet—will see 4 inches of new snow mixed with freezing fog before scattered precipitation continues. This pass serves as a critical supply route to Prudhoe Bay and offers some of the most remote backcountry terrain in North America. Even Prudhoe Bay itself, situated on the Arctic Ocean at 70 degrees north latitude, expects 2 inches as the system moves through, transitioning from snow to rain as marginal temperatures fluctuate near freezing.
For snow researchers and extreme winter enthusiasts, these Arctic accumulations represent the season's first significant deposits in America's northernmost reaches, setting the stage for what could be an active winter pattern across Alaska's Brooks Range.

About the U.S. snow report
How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?
As of October 15, 2026, 675 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 200% of normal snowpack. 406 have snow on the ground and 32 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Brady Ice-field, 48".
Where will it snow in the next 5 days?
The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Brady Ice-field (48"). The full ranking is in the table above.
What’s a SNOTEL station?
SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.
What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?
Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.
How fresh is the data?
Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.
Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?
No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
