What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Alaska Primed for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity

A stark contrast in winter weather is emerging across the nation, with Alaska's remote northern regions preparing for the most significant snowfall event while the Lower 48 experiences modest accumulations. Over the past 24 hours, Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains each recorded 2 inches of new snow, maintaining respectable base depths of 170 and 3 inches respectively. However, the real story lies ahead in the Arctic, where Imnaviat Creek is forecast to receive 6 inches of snow within the next 48 hours—the heaviest predicted accumulation nationwide—accompanied by areas of fog and challenging visibility conditions.

The Alaskan Arctic is positioning itself as the epicenter of winter activity, with the Brooks Range corridor experiencing a potent system moving through the region. Imnaviat Creek, situated at 68.6°N latitude along the North Slope, leads forecasted totals with 6 inches expected, while nearby Atigun Pass—a critical transportation route along the Dalton Highway—anticipates 4 inches amid mixed precipitation and freezing fog conditions. Even Prudhoe Bay, typically drier due to its coastal Arctic location, could see 2 inches as the system brushes the northernmost reaches of the continent.

These totals are particularly noteworthy given the minimal existing base depths of 1-2 inches, suggesting this system will effectively establish the early-season snowpack across Alaska's North Slope.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions are experiencing transitional weather patterns. Washington's Sawmill Ridge, despite its impressive 170-inch base depth indicating substantial early-season accumulation, faces a shift toward haze and potential thunderstorms—an unusual combination suggesting warm air intrusion at higher elevations. Colorado's Vallecito mirrors this pattern with thunderstorm activity forecast, which may temporarily interrupt consistent snow accumulation despite the recent 2-inch deposit.

For snow enthusiasts seeking the most intense winter conditions, attention should turn northward to Alaska's remote interior, where the combination of steady snowfall, fog, and freezing conditions will create quintessential Arctic winter environments over the coming days, far surpassing the sporadic activity currently affecting lower-latitude mountain ranges.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 2, 2026, 210 snow stations are reporting. 88 have snow on the ground and 21 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Tincan Snolite, 33".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Tincan Snolite (33"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
