What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Alaska Poised for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity

Snow enthusiasts looking for the most promising conditions over the next 48 hours should turn their attention northward to Alaska's remote Arctic regions, where a potent system is set to deliver the nation's most substantial snowfall. While the Lower 48 has experienced only modest accumulations in the past day—with Washington's Sawmill Ridge and Colorado's Vallecito each recording 2 inches—Alaska's North Slope is gearing up for considerably more impressive totals. Imnaviat Creek leads the forecast with 6 inches expected, accompanied by rain-snow mix and areas of fog, while nearby Atigun Pass anticipates 4 inches amid challenging conditions of freezing fog and scattered precipitation.

The contrast between current observations and forthcoming weather couldn't be starker. Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades, despite sitting at a healthy 170-inch base, recorded minimal overnight accumulation and faces an unusual forecast of haze transitioning to potential thunderstorms—hardly ideal skiing conditions for the region's resorts. Colorado's Vallecito tells a similar story, with just 2 inches falling in the past 24 hours atop a meager 3-inch base, followed by a forecast calling for showers and thunderstorms rather than the powder snow enthusiasts crave.

These summer-like patterns across the Rockies and Cascades underscore the seasonal transition, with meaningful snowfall increasingly rare at lower elevations.

Meanwhile, Alaska's remote Arctic corridor along the Dalton Highway presents the most compelling narrative for snow researchers and extreme weather enthusiasts. Imnavait Creek, positioned at 68.6°N latitude, sits at the epicenter of incoming accumulation, though its modest 2-inch base suggests this may be among the season's first significant events. Atigun Pass, the highest point on the Dalton Highway and a notorious weather bottleneck, will see freezing fog complicate the 4-inch snowfall, creating potentially treacherous conditions for the few travelers venturing through this wilderness.

Even Prudhoe Bay, perched on the Arctic Ocean at 70°N, expects 2 inches despite transitioning toward rain—a testament to the system's reach. For those tracking early-season snow patterns or studying Arctic precipitation dynamics, this event offers valuable data, though these locations remain far removed from any conventional ski resort infrastructure.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 23, 2026, 525 snow stations are reporting and the typical station is at 91% of normal snowpack. 223 have snow on the ground and 46 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Kelly Station, 29".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Kelly Station (29"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
