What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Alaska's Far North Braces for Significant Snowfall as Lower 48 Sees Modest Activity

Snow enthusiasts looking for fresh powder will want to turn their attention northward to Alaska's Brooks Range, where a potent weather system is poised to deliver the most substantial snowfall across the nation over the next 48 hours. While the Lower 48 has experienced only modest accumulations in the past day—with Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains each recording 2 inches—the real story is unfolding along Alaska's remote Dalton Highway corridor, where Arctic conditions are priming the region for impressive totals that could significantly impact both transportation and winter recreation.

Imnaviat Creek, situated at approximately 68.6°N latitude in the central Brooks Range, is forecast to receive the heaviest snowfall with 6 inches expected through midweek. This location, already maintaining a modest 2-inch base, will see accumulations amid challenging conditions including rain-snow mix and areas of fog, typical of transitional weather patterns in Alaska's interior. Just to the southeast, Atigun Pass—the highest point on the Dalton Highway at 4,739 feet elevation—is tracking for 4 inches of new snow combined with freezing fog and mixed precipitation.

This pass serves as a critical supply route to Prudhoe Bay's oil fields, and the forecasted conditions will likely create treacherous driving conditions for commercial truckers navigating the notorious grade. Even Prudhoe Bay itself, positioned on the Arctic Ocean coast at 70.3°N, expects 2 inches despite its low elevation and typically drier climate, with precipitation transitioning from snow to rain as marginal temperatures hover near freezing.

The contrast between Alaska's active pattern and the quieter conditions elsewhere is striking. Washington's Sawmill Ridge in the Snoqualmie Pass area received its 2 inches atop a robust 170-inch base, though the forecast calls for haze and possible thunderstorms rather than additional snow—disappointing for Pacific Northwest skiers hoping to extend the season. Colorado's Vallecito, despite sitting on just a 3-inch base and receiving minimal accumulation, faces thunderstorm activity rather than beneficial snowfall.

For researchers and powder hounds alike, Alaska's Brooks Range represents the nation's most dynamic snow event through midweek, though accessibility remains challenging in these remote locations far from established ski resorts.

Snow report FAQ

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 7, 2026, 343 snow stations are reporting. 133 have snow on the ground and 23 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Tokositna Valley, 18".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Tokositna Valley (18"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
