What the snow is doing today

Today’s summary of SNOTEL readings, snow analysis and NWS snow alerts across the country.

Arctic Alaska Emerges as Nation's Snow Hotspot as Early Season Activity Stirs

Snow enthusiasts looking for the most promising conditions should turn their attention northward to Alaska's Brooks Range, where a potent weather system is poised to deliver the nation's most significant snowfall over the next 48 hours. While the Lower 48 has seen modest activity with 2-inch accumulations reported at Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains over the past day, the real story is unfolding in Alaska's remote northern reaches, where Imnaviat Creek is forecast to receive 6 inches of new snow accompanied by rain/snow mix and areas of fog.

The Dalton Highway corridor, Alaska's legendary supply route, is bracing for challenging conditions as multiple observation points signal an incoming storm. Atigun Pass, sitting at the Continental Divide and often considered one of North America's most extreme mountain passes, is expected to accumulate 4 inches while battling freezing fog and mixed precipitation. Even Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic coast, typically too cold and dry for significant snowfall, is tracking 2 inches of potential accumulation amid transitioning rain and snow showers.

These totals are particularly noteworthy given the early-season timing and the region's notoriously thin existing snowpack, with base depths measuring just 1-2 inches at these northern locations.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions are experiencing more subdued conditions. Washington's Sawmill Ridge recorded 2 inches over the past 24 hours atop a robust 170-inch base, though thunderstorm activity is forecast to complicate conditions. Colorado's Vallecito matched that total but operates from a considerably thinner 3-inch base, with continued thunderstorm activity expected to deliver rain at lower elevations.

For powder hounds and researchers monitoring early-season snowpack development, Alaska's Brooks Range represents the nation's most dynamic snow environment in the current pattern. The combination of measurable snowfall, challenging visibility from fog, and the region's extreme latitude creates conditions that, while remote and inaccessible to most recreationalists, offer fascinating insights into Arctic weather patterns and early-winter snowpack establishment.

About the U.S. snow report

How much snow is there across the U.S. right now?

As of October 5, 2026, 212 snow stations are reporting. 88 have snow on the ground and 28 reported new snow in the last 24 hours. The most snow in the 5-day forecast: Flower Mountain Snotel, 31".

Where will it snow in the next 5 days?

The most snow in the 5-day forecast is at Flower Mountain Snotel (31"). The full ranking is in the table above.

What’s a SNOTEL station?

SNOpack TELemetry: automated stations run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Each measures snow depth, snow water equivalent (SWE), precipitation and air temperature — the standard snowpack measurement in the western U.S. and Alaska.

What does “percent of normal” snowpack mean?

Today’s snow water equivalent at a station compared with its historical median for the same date. Early and late in the season, when normal is near zero, the percentage is left out.

How fresh is the data?

Stations report hourly and Snoflo refreshes its tables through the day. Stations silent for more than three days are left out of today’s numbers.

Is this a substitute for the avalanche forecast?

No. For backcountry travel always check your regional avalanche center (avalanche.org). Snoflo is informational data only.
