Montana residents, particularly those in southwest Montana's Fire Weather Zone 110 including the Deerlodge and West Beaverhead areas, should prepare for critical fire weather conditions Sunday, August 23rd. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM MDT as a dry cold front moves through the region with southwest winds gusting 25-40 mph and relative humidity dropping to 15-25 percent. Given extremely dry antecedent conditions since early July—especially affecting the Kootenai Forest—any fires that develop will spread rapidly. The National Weather Service Missoula MT strongly advises against outdoor burning and urges residents to remain vigilant. Previous Fire Weather Watches for the Flathead Reservation and East Beaverhead have been cancelled. Monitor NWS Missoula MT for updated information on this developing situation.

What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Montana data?
USGS streamgauges report every 15 minutes; Snoflo re-pulls throughout the day. The AI briefing regenerates daily.
