Red Flag Warnings affect south-central and southeast Montana counties including Big Horn, Carbon, Yellowstone, Carter, Custer, Fallon, Powder River, Rosebelt, and Treasure, with extreme fire danger from low humidity (single digits to teens), temperatures reaching 94-101°F, and southwest winds gusting to 40 mph in the Bighorn Mountains. Northern Montana's fire zone 122 also faces critical fire conditions with humidity as low as 14 percent. Additionally, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for Fort Peck Lake until 2 PM, with southeast winds gusting to 30 mph creating hazardous conditions and waves up to 4 feet for small craft. Residents in affected areas should avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any ignition sources.

What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Montana data?
USGS streamgauges report every 15 minutes; Snoflo re-pulls throughout the day. The AI briefing regenerates daily.
