A Flood Watch remains in effect across south-central Montana including the Red Lodge, Paradise Valley, and Livingston areas through tonight, with scattered thunderstorms capable of producing flash flooding—particularly dangerous near recent burn scars from the Robertson Draw, East Side, and Elk Fires. Simultaneously, Extreme Heat Warnings affect eastern Montana counties (Dawson, Prairie, Richland, Wibaux, Carter, Custer, Fallon, and Powder River) with temperatures reaching 98-103°F, creating significant heat-related illness risks. Additionally, Fort Peck Lake is under a Lake Wind Advisory with gusts to 35 mph and 3-4 foot waves through Wednesday noon. Residents should avoid flood-prone areas, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and exercise caution near water bodies.

About Montana streamflow
Where does the Montana streamflow data come from?
The U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System. USGS streamgauges report continuously (every 15 minutes) and the data is the canonical real-time record for U.S. rivers. Snoflo pulls the latest readings and joins them to a 7-day NOAA weather forecast for each station.
What is cfs?
Cubic feet per second — the standard unit for streamflow. One cfs is about 7.5 gallons per second. Small creeks run at single-digit cfs; the Mississippi at hundreds of thousands.
What does Gauge Height mean?
The water level at the gauge in feet above the reference datum. Used together with discharge to track river state. Flood stage and runnable levels are typically expressed in gauge height (e.g., "flood at 16 ft").
How fresh is the Montana data?
USGS streamgauges report every 15 minutes; Snoflo re-pulls throughout the day. The AI briefing regenerates daily.
Can I get a flow alert for a Montana gauge?

Is this a substitute for an NWS flood warning?
