WISCONSIN RESERVOIR LEVELS

March 31 2025

Wisconsin's dams and reservoirs are showing varying conditions as per the latest observations, with some water bodies reporting lower-than-average gage heights for this time of year. Lake Winnebago, both at Oshkosh and near Stockbridge, has shown significant decreases, with current gage heights at 1 ft compared to an average of above 2.5 ft. Meanwhile, Lac Vieux Desert near Land O'Lakes, Devils Lake near Baraboo, and Lake Mendota at Madison are near their average levels. However, Lake Monona at Madison and Lake Waubesa at Mc Farland are also reporting lower levels, with current gage heights at 4 ft and 3 ft respectively, falling short of their averages by more than a foot.

These abnormal conditions, particularly the lower storage levels at some key dams and reservoirs, may be related to a variety of factors, including a possible decrease in snowpack or changes in river flows. Cross-referencing with multiple sources, including reports on wildlife activity such as the gathering of over 40 bald eagles on frozen Wisconsin waters, and weather forecasts that suggest severe thunderstorms, indicates that atmospheric conditions may be influencing water levels. While the presence of eagles suggests that some waters remain frozen, pointing towards a potentially delayed spring thaw, thunderstorms could signal heavy rainfalls that might soon affect reservoir levels. It's crucial for local residents and authorities to monitor these changes carefully, as they can impact water management, environmental conditions, and recreational activities in the region.
