The primary constituents of the flow are snowmelt and groundwater. The tunnel diverts water from the west side of the Continental Divide to the east side, providing water for agriculture, municipal, and industrial use. There are several tributaries and dams along the route of the tunnel, including the Fraser River and Williams Fork Reservoir. Seasonal trends show peak flow in the late spring and early summer due to snowmelt, and lower flow in the winter months. An interesting fact is that the Moffat Tunnel was completed in 1928 and is over 6 miles long, making it one of the longest transportation tunnels in North America.
